چکیده

The paper presents observations of gravity wave-induced temperature disturbances in the Martian atmosphere obtained with mid-infrared (MIR) spectrometer, a channel Atmospheric Chemistry Suite instrument on board Trace Gas Orbiter (ACS/TGO). Solar occultation measurements absorption band at 2.7 m were used for retrieving density and profiles between heights 20 160 km vertical resolution sufficient deriving small-scale structures associated waves. Several techniques distinguishing from background have been explored compared. Instantaneous profiles, amplitudes wave packets potential energy determined. Horizontal momentum fluxes drag estimated. analyzed data set 144 encompasses made over second half Year 34, longitude through . We observe enhanced dissipation/breaking mesopause region 100–130 km. Our analysis shows no direct correlation amplitude Brunt-Väisälä frequency. It may indicate that convective instability not be main mechanism limiting growth middle Mars.

Gravity Wave Drag in a Global Circulation Model of the Martian Atmosphere: Parametrisation and Validation

The eeect of orographically generated breaking gravity waves is parametrised in a global circulation model of the Martian atmosphere using schemes adapted from terrestrial models. The schemes arètuned' by comparing model integrations with and without gravity wave drag with temperatures derived from the Mariner 9 IRIS instrument. Without gravity wave drag the global circulation model temperature...

Analysis of Gravity Waves from Radio Occultation Measurements

In the height range 10-30 km atmospheric gravity waves lead to periodic perturbations of the background temperature field in the order of 2-3 K, which can be resolved in temperature profiles derived from radio occultation measurements. Due to the spherical symmetry assumption in the retrieval algorithm and the low horizontal resolution of the measurement weakening in the amplitude and phase shi...

Cosmic Ray Abundance at Aircraft Altitudes in the Earth’s Atmosphere

Recent investigations of cosmic ray primaries and secondaries at aviation altitudes in the Earth’s atmosphere include the study of Z≥2 particles along the London-New York flight routes on supersonic aircraft. Preliminary charge spectra will be presented for these nuclei and comparisons will be made with the predictions of cosmic ray transport models in the Earth’s atmosphere.

Parallel Computation of Gravity Wave Turbulence in the Earth’s Atmosphere

Gravity waves (GWs) are ubiquitous internal waves in which the restoring force is buoyancy. In the Earth’s atmosphere, GWs are generated whenever a parcel of air is disturbed from its equilibrium position. Disturbing sources include topographic features (e.g., mountains), convective instabilities (e.g., thunderstorms), frontal motions, and oscillations of jet streams. When the amplitude of a GW...

Characteristics of atmospheric gravity waves observed using the MU (Middle and Upper atmosphere) radar and GPS (Global Positioning System) radio occultation

The wind velocity and temperature profiles observed in the middle atmosphere (altitude: 10-100 km) show perturbations resulting from superposition of various atmospheric waves, including atmospheric gravity waves. Atmospheric gravity waves are known to play an important role in determining the general circulation in the middle atmosphere by dynamical stresses caused by gravity wave breaking. In...
